Justice Issues

Justice_Issues_Banner

Members of Eastside are encouraged to learn how they can take action to fight injustices in our community and around the world. As Christians we believe in a God who is concerned about the poor, those who are oppressed and disenfranchised:

I know that you, God, are on the side of victims,

that you care for the rights of the poor. -- Psalm 140:12

For You have been a defense for the helpless,

a defense for the needy in their distress. -- Isaiah 25:4

The United Nations Conference on Climate Change
07.12.09 to 18.12.09

The world was focused on the results of the Copehagen conference on climate change. The world leaders discussed ways to curb the effects of emissions on global warming. Yet, people all over the earth stood united in an attempt to make their concerns noticed by the delegates. Regardless, the conference failed to reach any agreement.

The moderator of the United Church of Canada has been active in monitoring the conference:  "Climate change represents the greatest moral challenge of our time. How we respond is a test of our courage" –Moderator Mardi Tindal -- check out her blog for updates

12.12.09 -- Several Eastside members organized and participated in a worldwide day of demonstration to bring the concerns of global warming to the forefront. Read the speech which was read at Vicotria Park in front of about 200 people (who braved windchill of -40C!!).

 KAIROS

The United Church of Canada is a participant in KAIROS.  We express our concern regarding its loss of funding , and the Minister of International Cooperation, Bev Oda's in appropriate role in that loss.  We are 'NOT' amused.  You are urged to act.  The Saskatchewan Division of Mission encourages us to:

  1. Contact our local MP to express your concern regarding Minister Bev Oda’s breach of trust and the implications for ongoing governance with integrity for our country.
  2. Communicate your concerns directly to Minister Bev Oda through her website: http://bevoda.ca/contact/
  3. Contact the Prime Minister’s Office to ask that the issue not be dismissed but be dealt with directly.
  4. To share this information and opportunity for action with members of our pastoral charge and outreach ministries.

  • KAIROS promotes grassroots education and action in Canada through and annual campaign and a network of 100 local groups.
  • Campaigns have focussed on water, climate change, and energy, indigenous rights, refugees, poverty in Canada and other topics. Most campaign materials and other resources are available electronically.
